Walmart is a multinational American retail corporation that operates a chain of supermarkets, discount stores, and grocery stores. Its headquarters are located in Bentonville, Arkansas. The company was founded on October 31, 1969, by Sam Walton, and owns and operates Sam’s Club retail warehouses. As of 2020 Walmart owns and operates 11,510 stores and clubs in 27 countries. The company operates under 56 different names, including Walmart in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the United Kingdom, Asda in the United Kingdom, Flipkart Wholesale in India, and fully owned operations in Argentina, Chile, Canada, and South Africa. Walmart has a minority stake of only 20% in Walmart Brasil, which was renamed Grupo Big in   August 2019

Walmart was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972 and by 1988, it was the largest retailer in the United States by revenue and the most profitable. The company was originally geographically limited to the southern and lower Midwest regions of the United States. In the early 1990s, Walmart opened stores from the East Coast to the West Coast and then expanded globally in commerce

Walmart is a publicly traded family-owned company, where the Walton family controls the company environment. The Walton heirs own more than 50% of Walmart through their holding company Walton Enterprises and their individual holdings. As of 2019, Walmart is the largest retailer in the United States
